Cogny’s story begins in 2017, at the height of Europe’s era of zero and even negative interest rates.
At the time, the company’s founder was working at BNP Paribas when he realized something alarming: the bank had no systematic way to check whether all loan contracts included the necessary floor clauses. Without them, negative rates could have meant the bank would actually owe money to borrowers.
The solution then was manual and painful - teams of analysts combing through contracts, line by line. Watching this unfold sparked a thought: what if technology could automate this entire process?
From RPA to AI
The earliest version of Cogny was built with Robotic Process Automation (RPA), then the emerging technology. It worked by extracting keywords from documents. As AI matured, the product evolved and became more powerful, eventually integrating directly into Excel to enable large-scale data extraction, KPI tracking, and full reporting.
Over the years, Cogny advanced through three key phases:
- Extraction - automating data capture from documents.
- Workflow integration - embedding the process directly inside Excel.
- Full reporting - generating entire reports, not just spreadsheets.
One principle remained unchanged: auditability. Every Cogny output is fully traceable. Click on a figure, and the platform takes you straight to the source document, with the relevant passage highlighted. Trust is earned by making every step transparent.
Breaking Free from Ctrl+F
Despite digital transformation, most professionals still rely on outdated workflows - typing keywords, hitting enter, enter, enter, and hoping to find what they need. It’s slow, error-prone, and deeply inefficient. Even worse, copy-pasted numbers in spreadsheets or reports quickly lose their origin. Traceability vanishes.
This is the frustration Cogny set out to solve: giving professionals a way to extract, structure, and trust the information buried in documents.
Real-World Impact
Today, Cogny works with organizations across industries:
- Worldline - sustainability reporting (CSRD)
- EDF - RFP (Request for Proposal) analysis and HR document review
- Flichy Grangé Avocats - legal casework under pressure
The last case is especially telling. Just days before a major hearing, Flichy Grangé Avocats received several thousand documents. Manually, it would have been impossible to process them all in time. With Cogny, the firm mobilized AI to analyze the materials, respond effectively, and ultimately secure the cancellation of half of a multi-million euro social security reassessment.
As the firm put it:
“Merci à Cogny, creator of the tool that allowed us to use the best of technology for our clients, and to all our lawyers who make the use of these tools concrete.”
Leadership Perspective
Stéphane Beaumont (Board Member) and Gabriel Rauscher's (COO) mission is straightforward:
“Highly qualified professionals shouldn’t be stuck on repetitive, low-value work. Cogny exists to give them back their time and confidence in the data they use.”
From finance to law to compliance, Cogny has become the bridge between documents and decisions.
